Joe has been a close friend of President, CEO and Founder of Alta Vista Sports, John Boyle for more than 30 years. Joe learned in the early 1980's that running in competition against Boyle in many road races was a difficult task and decided to join forces. Joe was co-owner of Smyrna Sports Shop in New Smyrna Beach with his brother John. They co-sponsored several successful races in New Smyrna with John Boyle and started a friendship which has covered more than 40,000 miles of running on Volusia County roadways over the past two decades. On July 4th, 1989 Joe was promoted to the Postmaster of DeLand, Florida which became Boyle and Guthrie's same home town. Daily training and daily running occurred ever since. Guthrie became an instant Alta Vista volunteer and is considered the current endurance record holder for Alta Vista volunteer work. Eighteen seasons ago Joe Guthrie and John Boyle began their coaching career with Stetson University. Joe serves as associate head coach with the Stetson University Cross Country program with Head Coach, John Boyle. Guthrie a veteran runner handles many of the administrative duties for the Hatters. Guthrie is responsible for managing day to day operations and programs support for all Stetson University sports. He also serves on the Stetson University President’s Quality of Service Council. Guthrie is actively involved in a variety of community service. In November of 2006 he was elected to the Board of Commissioners for the West Volusia Hospital Authority. He currently serves as the elected Chairman. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Hatter Club, the DeLand Naval Air Station Museum, President of the Hugh Ash Manor Board of Directors, Healthy Communities, Oakdale Cemetery Association, the Salvation Army, The News-Journal Sports Person of the Month and the Florida Postal Museum. Guthrie has served as President of the DeLand Rotary Club, President of the Sons of the American Revolution, Treasurer of the DeLand Chamber of Commerce and the Chairman for the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts. In April of 2007 Guthrie received the prestigious Spirit of Stetson Award and in November of 2007 he received the West Volusia Sports Person of the Month award. Guthrie is a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. In 1996 he received the United Way’s Community Hero Award and he carried the Olympic Torch. A native of Virginia, Guthrie earned his Associate of Science in Business Administration degree from Northern Virginia Community College. He also attended Virginia Military Institute and George Mason University. Guthrie received his BA in Business Administration (1988) and MBA (1996) from California Coast University. In 2005 Guthrie retired from federal government service after more than 30 years service and achieving the highest ranking Federal Officer in Volusia and Flagler counties as the Postmaster of Daytona Beach. His distinguished career included serving as the Postmaster of Orange City, Deltona, Sanford, DeLand, Daytona Beach and numerous District Manager Positions. He displayed his endurance and good health throughout his federal career having a perfect attendance profile - never missing any work days due to sick leave. Guthrie and his wife, Sandy live in the Trails West DeLand. They have two sons. Joseph Jr. a home builder in Telluride Co and Ian, a graduate student from Stetson University now at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
